How does Solar work?

A Solar PV System is typically comprised of 6 main components. In short - light from the sun charge cells in the panels to produce DC, stored in a battery or converted by an inverter into AC and then used by the house.

  • The Photovoltaic cells in your panels convert sunlight into direct current (DC). Note: they don’t need direct sunlight, and generate even on rainy/overcast days.

  • This protects a battery from overcharging.

  • Energy produced by the PV array is stored here, predominantly to be used during night when you’re not generating.

  • An inverter will convert the DC power that is stored / being produced into alternating current (AC) electricity - so that it can be used around the house.

  • This would measure how much electricity you use for your home, and how much is being exported to the grid. Most installers have apps so you can see this data on your phone easily.

  • You may still import electricity from the grid during peak periods, or at night - the use of batteries helps reduce this.
